SUMMARY:OPEN Seminar: Online Safety and the Rights of Children and Young People
DESCRIPTION:Join OPEN and the Centre for our annual seminar dedicated to championing the voices and rights of children and young people. This year the OPEN Seminar is focusing on policy and service responses in relation to online safety. \nRecent government discussions on online safety have emphasised strengthening measures to protect young people from online harms. However\, the critical voices of children and young people themselves are often missing from these conversations. \nThis seminar will bring together influential leaders\, policymakers\, researchers\, and advocates to address the urgent issue of online safety for children and young people. The voices and lived experiences of young people will be central\, as they navigate the dangers of gendered and sexually harmful digital content. \nBy centring the perspectives of children and young people\, we aim to develop more effective and empathetic strategies for online safety. Insights from research and lived experiences will be key to understanding the challenges they face and shaping policies that truly safeguard children and young people in the digital world. \nRegister here \nKeynotes\n\nAnne Hollonds\, National Children’s Commissioner\nWill deliver a keynote presentation on the critical importance of quality engagement with children. Drawing insights from the recent Do things with the information we tell you’ Supporting Quality Engagement with Children report\, Anne will explore how meaningful communication with children can shape their development and uphold their rights. Her address will explore practical strategies for promoting supportive environments where children’s voices are truly heard and respected.\nRebekah Kilpatrick\, Head of the National Office for Child Safety\nWill be presenting a keynote address on the urgent issue of online safety for children and young people. In response to the rising threats in digital spaces\, Rebekah will discuss the proactive measures being implemented by the National Office for Child Safety. Her presentation will cover strategies to protect children from online harms\, promote digital resilience\, and ensure safe online environments.\n\nResearch Presentations\n\nImage-based sexual abuse as a means of coercive control: Victim-survivor experiences by Professor Nicola Henry\, RMIT University.\nThe presentation will explore the various forms of image-based sexual abuse (IBSA)\, including its prevention and the importance of non-legal measures\, while drawing on young people’s insights on effective responses.\nFrom Andrew Tate to online pornography: Young men are critical consumers of online content by Professor Amanda Keddie\, Deakin University.\nThe presentation will explore findings from a recent study\, supported by the Australian eSafety Commission. The presentation highlights the risks young men face online and their critical perspectives. While concerns exist about exposure to harmful content\, the discussion will focus on how young men actively engage with and challenge these negative narratives.\n\nLived Experience Parent Advocate\n\nWayne Holdsworth from S(MAC)K TALK will share his story about his son Mac and the signs and process people can use to assist people that may be experiencing online harms.\n\n  \n Register here

SUMMARY:Promoting Children’s Mental Health and Wellbeing in the Context of Family and Domestic Violence
DESCRIPTION:Family Violence & Sexual Violence Event (FV&SV) \nThis interactive online event\, the second of the series and facilitated by Emerging Minds\, will improve understanding of how family and domestic violence and abuse may be affecting children’s health\, development and wellbeing. \nPractitioners from specialist and non-specialist programs will likely come into contact with families who have been or are currently impacted by family and domestic violence and abuse. Therefore\, it’s crucial for professionals to have the skills and confidence to discuss with parents how such situations impact children’s health\, development\, and overall wellbeing. We know that children will be impacted by family and domestic violence even if they are not subjected to abuse or witness it directly. \nThis interactive presentation will support practitioners to: \n\nConsider the impact of family and domestic violence on children’s mental health and wellbeing\nUnderstand the importance of being child-aware and parent-sensitive\nExplore ways to talk and work with parents to support and improve their children’s mental health and wellbeing\n\nThis online event will be particularly valuable to those designing and leading child and family programs and for passionate-change makers wanting to better embed children’s social and emotional wellbeing in their organisational advocacy and strategy. \nThe Family Violence & Sexual Violence Knowledge (FV&SV) Hub Project \nThe Centre\, in collaboration with No to Violence\, Safe and Equal\, and Sexual Assault Services Victoria are working on the Family Violence and Sexual Violence Knowledge Hub Project. The project aims to support children and families experiencing family violence and family violence service users. The project will strengthen practice\, identify data gaps and build an evidence base in this sector. As part of the collaboration project\, the Centre will be hosting a series three online events. \nRegister today!

DESCRIPTION:National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day is our national day dedicated to celebrating our children and has been held every year on the 4 August since 1988.\nNational Children’s Day gives all Australians the opportunity to show their support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and learn about the impact that culture\, family and community play in the life of every Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander child. \nChildren’s Day is an initiative of SNAICC – National Voice for our Children and we organise a national launch event annually for Children’s Day to be held at a different location each year. These events also see the wider community take the lead in celebrating Children’s Day with amazing and diverse celebrations across the country. SNAICC produces and distributes resources to help local communities and organisations around the country celebrate the day\, including 15\,000 Children’s Day bags and other resources to support more than 500 community events across Australia. \nThe 2024 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day theme Strong in Culture\, Stronger Together elevates the intention of Children’s Day\, focusing on the strength of our children that comes from their connection to culture and mob. \nView a comprehensive list of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander child protection services in Australia. \nFind out about our Learning and Development opportunities designed to improve the quality\, accessibility and long-term viability of services for our children and families.
